In less than a week, the outgoing GOP congresswoman has broken with her party and endorsed a Democrat in a Senate race.
At a Cleveland State University event, Cheney said that Ohio Republicans should not vote for J.D. Vance because of his stance on voter fraud.
On her way to Michigan to campaign for Slotkin, the congresswoman stopped at the event.
Cheney said she doesn't think she has ever voted for a Democrat.
While we can say, look, the Biden economic policies are not policies we would support, and we believe in limited government, low taxes and a strong national defense, we don't get to have those debates if we elected Donald Trump again," Cheney said.
Cheney's choice to serve on the House January 6 committee made her a pariah in the GOP and led her colleagues to remove her last year as leader of the House Republican conference. After Trump led a furious campaign to defeat her, she was easily ousted from her House seat. Keeping Trump and his followers from taking power is Cheney's top priority, even if it means supporting candidates who don't agree with her conservative ideology. Her endorsement in Ohio comes at a time when Republicans around the country appear to be pulling away in neck-and- neck races. According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Ryan leads by two points.
If Trump becomes the GOP's presidential nominee, Cheney will leave the GOP.
If Donald Trump is the GOP nominee, Liz Cheney won't be a Republican anymore.
Liz Cheney lost her seat to a Trump-backed candidate.
Liz Cheney is a democrat and has a post-congressional political career in mind.
