I don't know if it's just me or if it's kind of crazy that Kyrie Irving didn't even get a game reprieve for posting a movie with antisemitic cliches and then doubling down on it before eventually removing it. The NBA's biggest misunderstood genius/narcissist, who has been a problem child for years, promoted content in a similar vein to an overlap of audience, the same week that he was canceled for giving up some Nazi shit.
It is difficult to separate an artist from their work when people praise a skill set as great. The news of Jerry Lee Lewis' death gave his work as much attention as the fact that one of his seven wives was his daughter. Lewis is the most recent example, but how about R Kelly, Michael Jackson, Woody Allen, Kobe Bryant, etc.
We have seen more highlights of his handles than his teams have won.
The ability of the Brooklyn Nets and the NBA to read the room is shown by the fact that Irving was allowed to slide. After the Georgia-Florida game Saturday, a large projection co-signing with Yeezus will take place at TIAA Bank Field, thanks to Deadspin writer Eric Blum. The next most visible name to continue a dangerous trend of hate speech is the Brooklyn hooper.
The conversation is still centered around basketball. It's not a good idea to talk about how bad the Nets have been with Kevin and Kyrie. Two guys I respected, who have been vocal about racism, decided not to discuss the content of the show and why it was wrong to share it on the show. One player in the locker room said that he doesn't think Irving is a bad person. What about the Nets guard over the last year or so has given you a reason to doubt his abilities?
The Association loves tout its record on activism in order to further establish itself as a progressive league. Brooklyn didn't make Irving available to the media after the game despite fans sitting courtside wearing "fight antisemitism" shirts. The team and league tried to downplay it, likening it to when protesters wore "stand with Hong Kong" shirts to the same arena in 2019.
The owner of the Nets said the Western media doesn't understand how third-rail the issue of democracy in Hong Kong is among the Chinese community. This was an opportunity for more to be done to encourage education.
It seems unfair that the league and organization would make an example out of Kyrie, but he doesn't understand the concept of accountability, and this isn't a vaccine issue that's subject to change by the mayor. Under the guise of the league's ethos, Silver or Tsai could drop the hammer.
As long as Irving is on the court, and wowing hoops heads with sleight of hand, it's impossible to take the proper amount of time to focus and have meaningful discourse about how scary it is.
Steve Nash spoke about how the organization can evolve after the Nets beat the Pacers.
I hope we all get through this together. We always have an opportunity to learn and grow. The organization is trying to communicate with us through this. Try to come out in a better position and understand each other's point of view.
Irving isn't deserving of understanding or empathizing after showing zero remorse, and he needs a timeout. The Nets improved to.500 on the season with a big boost from their All-Star guard.
