The Federal Communications Commissioner wants the US government to ban TikTok.

Republican Commissioner Brendan Carr said in an interview that he doesn't think there's a path forward for anything other than a ban.

Meta shares were up 4% on Tuesday.

The comments from Carr, one of four current Commissioners at the agency, do not indicate any pending actions against TikTok.

The company is being reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. because it is owned by a Chinese company. The New York Times reported in September that the Department of Justice is leading the negotiations.

Bipartisan concerns over TikTok's security risks are not uncommon. The company's relationship with its Chinese owner has been reviewed by both the Trump and Biden administrations. U.S. officials have been skeptical of TikTok's claims that it doesn't have to turn over user data to the government.

Commissioner Carr doesn't have a role in the confidential discussions with the U.S. government related to TikTok.
