According to reports, the Chicago Bears are getting a second-round pick in exchange for Chase Claypool.
The terms of the deal were reported just before the 4 p.m. The trade deadline is at 10:00 pm.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterThe second-round pick that Chicago traded to Pittsburgh for WR Chase Claypool is its own pick, not the second-round pick that the Bears received from the Ravens for Roquan Smith, per source. https://t.co/tRA87SpD8W
The Bears are sending their own second-round pick instead of the one they acquired Monday as part of the Roquan Smith trade. If the season ended today, the Bears' second-round pick would be a better choice than the Ravens'.
Claypool's name had been bandied about in trade rumors for a long time, with the Steelers setting a high price on the Notre Dame product. Despite the team's offensive struggles, he's a big body with high end speed and versatile playmaking ability.
Claypool burst onto the scene as a rookies with 873 receiving yards and 11 total touchdown. He has only scored three times in his last 23 games over the last two years. The dip in production may have been caused by the lack of offensive explosion the last two seasons.
Claypool isn't likely to see much of a change in his season. Over the first half of the season, they have been the most run-heavy team in the league, scheming their offense around the ability of David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.
It's possible that Claypool's arrival will lead to a more wide-open passing game, but another young, talented wide receiver is currently 52nd in the league in targets. It is possible that this is more of a long-term move than a short-term plan to make Chicago better.
