Bill Belichick moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list as the visiting New England Pats defeated the New York Jets 22 17 on Sunday.
Sunday's game broke a tie with George Halas for the most wins by a Chicago Bears coach with 400. Don Shula has 347 wins.
"Maybe we'll talk about that when it's over, add them up at the end of the game," said the coach.
The game ball was presented to the coach by the owner of the team.
Mac Jones opened his postgame news conference by giving a shout out to the coach for his achievement. It's a blessing to play for him, he's done a great job here. We don't do all the individual awards, but that is a big one.
Matthew said that he noticed that Belichick passed Halas.
Our coach is very proud of us. He tells us that he won all the games because he prepared his players and put them in a good position to make plays. He being second all-time is just an accomplishment to him as a coach and as well as the players.
In addition to his tenure with the Cleveland Browns, which lasted from 1991-95, he has been the coach of the New England Pats for 23 years.
In the first quarter and second quarter, the Pats fell behind by three and 10 points, respectively, and needed a comeback to get back in the game.
The Jets had a chance to tie the game at the end of the first half, but Jones was called for a roughing the passer penalty and his pick six was nullified.
It's possible that breaking a tie with Halas by beating the Jets will have some added meaning for Belichick, who was a Jets assistant from 1997 to '99 and was poised to take over for Bill Parcells as the team's head coach.
The Jets gave up a first-round draft choice to hire him as their head coach.
"It's an amazing number, that's why he's on the verge of passing him," said AndyReid, a close friend of the coach. He puts in a lot of effort. He works hard. I know how it's been done because he's a great football coach.
The Colts will be the next opponent for the Pats.
