Jack Dorsey, the company's founder and former CEO, announced a new social-media company just as Musk was about to buy it.
Last Tuesday, Bluesky Social announced that it's launching soon and is currently recruiting users. Company representatives said that 30,000 people signed up within two days. Before the platform is publicly available, users need to join the app to become a tester.
Bluesky wants to support a new foundation for social networking which gives creators independence from platforms, developers the freedom to build, and users a choice in their experience. One of the main selling points of Bluesky is that it will give users control of their algorithms.
In private text messages between Dorsey and Musk that became public in the course of Musk's legal saga, Dorsey said a new platform was needed. It cannot be a business. That's what made me leave. He said that the social networking site should have an open-sourced protocol similar to the Signal app.
When he stepped down as CEO in November of 2021, he had been at the helm for more than two years. He was replaced by Parag Agrawal. After taking over the company this week, Musk fired several people, including the CFO, the legal chief, and the general counsel.
A person familiar with the matter told The Information that Musk fired them for cause so they wouldn't have to pay stock awards.
