The historic pedestrian suspension bridge in western India collapsed suddenly on Sunday, killing at least 67 people, according to reports.
More than 400 people were on the bridge in Morbi, a city in Gujarat state, when it collapsed.
Hundreds of people were plunged into the Macchu River below, and footage from the scene shows victims trying to escape by climbing up the bridge's wire remains and swimming to shore.
The New York Times reported that most of the deaths were elderly people.
A Morbi official told The New York Times that 170 people had been rescued.
It is not clear what caused the bridge to fall, but it is thought that the bridge was overcrowded due to celebrations for the festival of lights.
The Indian government has set up a team to investigate the rescue attempts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from Gujarat, announced that the families of victims who were killed or injured would receive financial compensation.
The Julto Pool was opened during the British rule of India. The bridge, which is a popular tourist attraction, was closed for six months for renovations, but reopened last week, just in time for the new year.
