A crowd surge in a narrow alleyway in Itaewon, a popular nightlife district in South Korea's capital city, resulted in the deaths of at least 153 people. According to the New York Times, most of the victims were teenagers or in their twenties. There was little crowd control and few police in the area ahead of the crush, but officials still don't know what caused the crowd surge. Lee Sang-min, South Korea's minister of the interior and safety, said police did not expect Halloween crowds to be larger than in the past. Some personnel were diverted because of protests in other areas.
At least 146 people were killed in a fire.
