Russian naval officers discussed nuking Berlin and two German military bases during a training exercise last year in a possible attempt to scare Germany, according to a report.

According to several German security service sources, Russian officers mentioned Berlin as a possible target for a nuclear strike.

The Ramstein Air Base in southwestern Germany, which is a headquarters for the United States Air Force in Europe, is one of the targets mentioned by the magazine.

The Times of London reported that the messages were intercepted at the end of last year while Russian warships were in the Baltic.

The Times said that it was possible that the chatter was intended to frighten Germany and the West.

During the Cold War, deep-held fears of a nuclear war in Germany began to come back to life. According to the news agency, demand for private bunkers has gone up.

Ramstein is a town near a military base. The mayor of Kaiserslautern, which is next to Ramstein, told the news agency that fear is making a comeback.

He said that the purpose of Russia's nuclear rhetoric was to stir up fears in order to prevent the West from supporting Ukraine.
