Saturday night's encounter with Lecce was a dour affair that added to the misery of those watching in black and white.

The fans of the Old Lady have suffered since their club was knocked out of the top of the summit. Inter won the Scudetto in 2021, followed by Milan last season, and then AS Roma won the European trophy.

As the demise continued, a midweek defeat to Benfica saw them crash out of the competition before the group stage had finished.

The team went to the Stadio Via del Mare and once again delivered a bad show. There were a lot of excuses, starting with the fact that many of the players weren't available.

The Bianconeri should have had more than enough quality to see off a Lecce side that had scored less goals than all but one team in the league so far this season. After more than 30 minutes had passed, the visitors could not find a way to open up their opponent.

The Bianconeri played without creativity or a plan of attack and knocked the ball around in hopes of getting a goal.

The sheer amount of players missing forced Max Allegri to field a number of young players, with two of them being 19-year-olds.

The Coach introduced Moise Kean, Nicol Fagioli, and Samuel Iling-Junior in the second half, and it was a seemingly innocuous pass from the latter that finally broke the stalemate.

Iling-Junior knocked the ball into the box where Fagioli was blocked off by a wall of red and yellow shirts but, as he turned, he curled a superbly placed shot into the top corner.

I am very happy with the goal. Fagioli said that he had been waiting for this moment for a long time and that it was amazing to score his first goal in the league.

I wanted to run to the bench and celebrate with my teammates because they gave me so much support. It was my way of saying thank you. The ball was in the air for a long time when I took the shot.

The similarity between the goal and Del Piero's trademark finish underscored the fact that this team is capable of more than they are achieving.

Fagioli is a young player who has been at the club since 2015, his talent obvious from the beginning, with Allegri telling reporters that theMidfielder "knows football and its tempo very well, it's a pleasure to watch him play"

He didn't get a chance to play during the first tenure of the Coach, nor did he get a chance to play during the second, nor did he get a chance to play during the third, nor did he get a chance to play during the fourth, nor did he get a After a 20-minute substitute appearance in the league, he was shipped off to Cremonese in Italy.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fagioli only signed a new contract if he was given the chance to play for the first team.

He has seen a total of 104 minutes across five substitute appearances with 45 of those coming against Lecce on Saturday.

Perhaps a match-winning goal will lead to more playing time for him, because that strike is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dire campaign. They need a new thing that isuntainted by fear and uncertainty. Nicol Fagioli is needed more.
