  • I've worked on cruises for seven years and have seen many mistakes made by passengers.

  • Don't walk your luggage on board if you want to check it.

  • Make sure to book your excursions before you go.

A lot of decisions and planning can be lost in translation when sailing for the first time.

The most common mistakes new passengers make are listed by me.

Overpacking for your vacation

cabins are often small and have very limited storage as most people overpack for cruises

You can plan out what you'll need on the ship's website instead of putting your entire closet in your luggage.

You will be a lot happier when you have everything you need, as well as the space to spread out.

Skipping online check-in

It's a good idea to check in online prior to your vacation since it will allow you to complete a virtual muster drill and pick a boarding time.

I've found that earlier boarding times make it easier to avoid the lines and have more fun.

Flying into the port city on the same day as your cruise

If you think you have enough time to get from the airport to the ship, you're wrong.

If your flight is canceled or delayed, it's best to fly in the day or night before to get a hotel with a port shuttle.

Immediately heading to the buffet on the first day

Most passengers go to the buffet when they get on the plane. This can make it the most crowded place.

Save the buffet for later if you want to explore lesser-known food options.

Walking your luggage on board

You will be offered to have your bags taken when you arrive at the ship.

Many passengers keep their luggage on them but don't know that their room won't be ready in time, so they have to carry their suitcases around the ship.

It is free and reliable to check your luggage.

Standing in the guest-services line on boarding day

Considering there are usually alternatives available, this is probably the worst time of the year.

The passengers join the line for a variety of reasons. There are different kiosks for different areas on the ship.

You can set up your onboard payment account before you go on the cruise to save time.

Forgetting to book excursions

A lot of passengers don't plan their shore excursions in advance.

You'll spend a lot of time trying to book excursions, but you'll most likely find that many of them are sold out.

Debarking without a plan

After a relaxing vacation, disembarkation day can be a big problem. Make sure you are ready.

You should know when you need to get to the airport and when you need to debark.

You can save a lot of energy and worry by coordinating all of this.
