According to sources, the San Antonio Spurs released Joshua Primo because he exposed himself to women.
The decision to release Primo was sudden and shocking and it spoke to the severity of the issues surrounding the promising 19-year old player.
The $4.3 million option on Primo's contract was picked up by the team, signifying a level of confidence in his future with the team.
Many NBA teams remain intrigued with Primo's talent and potential, but are looking for a more complete understanding of the situation as they consider placing a claim to acquire him before he clears waivers and becomes a free agent Monday afternoon, sources said.
To claim Primo, a team would need the available cap space or a traded player exception significant enough to absorb his salary. He would get $4.3 million on his contract.
There is a need to continue mental health treatment more fully.
"I am aware that you are surprised by today's announcement," he said. I am taking this time to focus on my mental health treatment more fully after seeking help to deal with previous trauma. I want to be able to talk about these issues in the future so I can help other people who have gone through the same thing. Privacy is appreciated at this time.
He averaged 5.9 points in 54 games for the Spurs.
He averaged 7.0 points off the bench in the first four games. After not playing in Wednesday's road loss to the Minnesota Wolves and being listed as out for Friday's home game against the Chicago Bulls, Primo was released about an hour before tip off.
RC Buford said in a statement that they hoped the decision would serve the best interest of the organization and Joshua.
