One of the most varied itineraries of any cruise line is offered by Viking.

The company is based in California and offers ocean cruises in almost every corner of the world.

Most cruise lines are similar. Ocean cruises and river cruises are not usually offered by cruise lines. They have a small range of itineraries.

Viking has a large footprint when it comes to European river itineraries, with a wide range of sailings on nearly every European river.

The company just started river trips on the Mississippi River, as well as on the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in Southeast Asia.

There are 80 river ships in Viking. None of the river lines that cater to North Americans have more than that number of vessels.

It considers its home turf to be Northern Europe and the Nordic countries. The company was founded by Norwegians. There are seven ocean ships from North America to Asia and Australia.

The first expedition ship built for travel to remote, hard-to-reach places was launched by the line this year.

There are eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean as well as around-the-world voyages.

Scandinavia and Northern Europe

The homeland of the company's founder and chairman is Norway, where many of the company's itineraries begin or end.

The company considers the Baltic Sea and the Nordic countries to be viking country.

Viking devotes a large number of its ships to itineraries around the Baltic Sea and other destinations in Northern Europe during the summer. The relatively small but famously scenic Norwegian city of Bergen is being used as a gateway by many. Variations on the typical Baltic Sea or Norwegian fjords cruise can be made.

The line's most popular route in the region, "Viking Homelands," is a two-week long, one-way trip between Bergen and Stockholm that combines several days of exploring the fjord region of Norway's west coast with more-typical Baltic cruise destinations such as St.

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Viking has pulled the St. Petersburg stop, as well as stops in Finland and Estonia, from their homelands itinerary for 2022.

Several stops in the northernmost part of the country are on the itinerary. The one-way route between Bergen and London is unique because it combines calls in far- north Honningsvag and Tromso, Norway, with visits to Scotland and the Orkney Islands. The archipelagos are part of the United Kingdom.

The trips range in length from 7 nights to 28 nights.

One-way, 28- night voyages between Bergen and New York City are among the longest that Viking offers. There are stops in Canada and Norway.

Most of the Norwegian ships sail out of Bergen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London.

The Mediterranean

VIKING CRUISES

A major player in Mediterranean sailings, Viking has more than 30 itineraries that include stops in the region.

Some of the trips include stops in both the Western Mediterranean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The line has a 14-night itinerary that takes in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Monaco, France and Spain.

The Empires of the Mediterranean voyages between Venice and Athens focus on stops along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea.

The main hubs of the line are Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Venice, Italy, and Athens.

The giant of river cruising in Europe is known as Viking. More than any other river line caters to North Americans, the company has 70 river ships on a broad swath of the continent's rivers.

Half of all river cruises taken by North Americans are taken by the line.

The Rhine, Main and Danube are some of the rivers in Europe where Viking has a large presence. The war in the country has led to the cancellation of the line's Ukraine voyages.

There are multiple itineraries with lengths ranging from seven nights to 22 nights on most of the rivers.

There are 10 different itineraries on the Rhine River, ranging from seven to 22 nights. It adds travel on the Main and Danube rivers.

Russia

In normal years, the line is the major player in Russian river cruises aimed at North Americans.

All Russia river sailings have been canceled in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The situation in Ukraine over the next few months will determine whether or not Russia river cruises resume.

Trips between Moscow and St. Petersburg are usually on a single itinerary that includes travel on the rivers of the Russian Federation.

Four days are devoted to visiting Moscow and four days to visit St. Petersburg on the 13 day trip. The city of Yaroslavl is visited by Viking river ships. The home of an open-air museum of architecture that is a UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the additional stops.

Antarctica

VIKING CRUISES

The destination is a major growth area for the line. Two new expedition cruise vessels were added by Viking.

The first vessels to sail toAntarctica were dubbed Viking Octantis. The Viking Polaris is the second ship in the series. The two ships are making waves in the market for Antarctica cruises because of their unique features.

The Hangar is an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to two of each ship's exploratory vessels while still inside the ship. It is the first for an expedition ship and it is improving the experience for passengers.

There are three types of Viking ships.

Every cabin on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris has glass walls that slide open from the top to create a balcony-like feeling.

A typical trip starts with a night at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before a flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, where you can board one of the two expedition ships for an 11-night cruise to the South Pole. 13 nights on one of the ships is included in the longer version of the trip.

Sailings that combine a visit to the White Continent with stops in the Falkland Islands and Brazil are offered by Viking.

Viking had its first sailings on the Great Lakes this year. Both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will be spending their summers in the Great Lakes.
