Phillies win Game 1 of World Series on J.T. Realmuto homer in 10th

After taking a foul ball to the mask, Philadelphia catcher J.T. Realmuto hit a home run in the top of the 10th.

After the dramatic win, Realmuto said, "Just ecstatic to put a good swing on that pitch, be able to give our team the lead" We did a great job fighting there.

It was the sixth time in World Series history that a team overcame a five-run deficit. The Astros have lost to the Angels in each of the past two times that Baker has been in charge.

After scoring three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the score at 5, the Phils' second time through the order against Verlander was a success. The right-handed pitcher was perfect through the first three frames.

"I think the second time you see it, you've seen it once," Thomson said. There is some familiarity there. I believe that's the reason we had some success off him again.

Right fielder Kyle Tucker hit two home runs in back-to-back frames to help the Astros jump out to a lead. After thePhillies tied the score at 5-5 on a two-run double by Realmuto in the fifth, Thomson brought in relief pitcher Jose Alvarado.

Thomson said that once they scored the three, they were feeling it. We got back in this thing now. I went to Alvarado in the fifth because I thought the momentum had changed there. It was important to get through those guys so that we could figure out the rest.

Thomson used all of his high-leverage arms, including the scheduled Game 3 starter, as the Philadelphia's relief corps threw 523 shut outs.

Today is a sidebullpen day for Game 3 and we thought we'd put him in if that was the case. That is fine if not. The thing came up.

He threw just 11 pitches on Friday, but Thomson didn't rule him out for the next game. The gap was bridged by his performance, with Seranthony Dominguez getting two outs in the eighth and ninth to give the Phils a chance to win.

A single and stolen base by Jose Altuve gave the winning run a chance to score. Nick Castellanos made a great sliding catch to preserve the tie after Jeremy Pena blooped a ball into right.

After Altuve got second, Castellanos took a few steps in. He was able to close the gap on the ball thanks to the extra yards.

Castellanos thought he had a better chance of blooping something in there than torching him. I just thought of it on the fly.

The catch kept the game going. He hit a three-run home run into the right-field stands, which sent his teammates into a frenzy.

Since he was a child, Realmuto has imagined it.

He said that he meant whiffle ball games in the backyard. I had thousands of at-bats in that situation.

The delay was caused by Realmuto taking a foul ball to the mask and the training staff attending to him. He didn't leave the game.

Realmuto said that his head was not the problem. I think it smoked my jaw. It's probably not going to be easy for me to eat dinner tonight, but as long as my head's okay, I'll be able to go.

The Astros left the tying and winning runs on base in the 10th as Tucker struck out and AledmysDiaz grounded out.

Castellanos was asked what the vibe was in the locker room after the game.

He told them to go to work. They've been there before. This team does a great job of that. We know there is no quitting. We respect all 27 outs and we take it personally.

The Astros lost in the playoffs for the first time this year.

The second game is Saturday. Framber Valdez will start for the Astros, and the right-handed Wheeler will start for thePhillies.
