  • Google Messages may have already begun early tests for end-to-end encryption for group chat messages.
  • It was spotted by a Reddit user in a group chat with Google Messages and Samsung Messages RCS users.
  • Google mentioned at I/O 2022 that it would bring the security feature to group chats via an open beta later this year.

The new end-to-end encryption technology is being tested by the company.

A message was sent between members of the group chat that said it was secure. Users were using two messaging services in the chat When you use end-to-end encryption, only the people you've sent the message to can see it, and you can't see anyone else.

The user took it upon themselves to sift through the app's menu and find out that end-to-end encryption is turned on for group chats.

The lock icon below the text message is used to protect the message from being read. During its I/O 2022 event, the company announced that it would begin looking to provide this security feature to group chats.

In the company's post, it was mentioned that the feature would be open to the public in the fall. The early testing phase seems to be slowly making its way around.

Once the security feature is out and in users' hands, all members must turn it on.
