A Colorado man was found guilty of swindling hundreds of thousands of dollars from an online campaign to build a wall along the U.S. southern border.
After a week of jury deliberations, a jury in Manhattan federal court found Timothy Shea guilty of two conspiracy counts and an obstruction of justice charge. As he left the building, he didn't say anything. The sentencing was scheduled for January 31.
11 jurors wrote a note to the judge saying that one juror had accused the others of being politically biased and that the trial should be held in the south.

John Meringolo argued that prosecutors had failed to prove that there was fraud in the promotion of the "We build the wall" fundraiser that attracted $25 million in donations from hundreds of thousands of people.
Meringolo told jurors that New York was an improper location for the trial.
He tried to convince them that his client had a right to accept reimbursement of expenses related to the wall because he had done a lot of work negotiating with homeowners to have the wall built. There were a few miles of wall.

Damian Williams said in a statement that the defendants lied to donors and stole over $25 million from their victims.
He said his office had "stated our belief in the powerful and compelling evidence that showed Shea's guilt" after the trial ended. The jury found him guilty of all the charges in the indictment. I applaud the prosecutors of this office for their perseverance.
He pleaded not guilty to New York state charges of cheating investors to the "We build the wall" campaign. Federal crimes are not eligible for presidential pardons.
