The school said in a statement that Vince Dooley died at the age of 90.
The University of Georgia had a head football coach and athletic director who retired in 2004.
During his 25 seasons as head coach, he took the team to 20 bowl games. In 1994, he was in the College Football Hall of Fame.
The university added his name to the field of the stadium in honor of him. There is a statue of Vince Dooley at the entrance of the Vince Dooley Athletic Complex.
The program's second national championship was won in January 2022, and he was at the game.
After eight seasons as an assistant atAuburn, where he was the captain during his playing days, he joined Georgia in 1964. When Georgia fans realized that their new coach wasn't Vince Lombardi, it wasn't a popular decision to hire him, according to him.
"I don't think I'm the most well-received coach who's ever been hired," he said. There is no way that I would hire myself as an administrator. A coach at a rival school is 31 years old. If you had to hire a coach at Georgia, would you say this is the coach?
A four-year run in 1980, led by Herschel Walker, resulted in three straight SEC titles for the bulldogs. Georgia won the 1980 national championship with a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to cap a perfect season.
Walker won the trophy.
During his 25-year run as athletic director, he led a program that won 18 national titles and 80 SEC titles. He is a member of both the Alabama and Georgia sports halls of fame.
