The qualification requirements for the elite were reduced. In order to retain their status, members need to accumulate 42 nights, 21 stays and 84,000 base points. Executive Traveler was the first to report this news.

Some Diamond elite members may not be able to meet these requirements. The Diamond Status Extension for members who do not requalify this year but meet other requirements will be reintroduced.

The Diamond Status Extension was put on hold for a few years because status was already extended.

You need to know what to look for.

Hilton Diamond Status Extension

CHRIS RANDALL/HILTON

You will earn Diamond elite status if you accumulate 42 nights, 21 stays or 84,000 base points. If you don't requalify by the end of the year but meet the requirements, you can extend your status for a year.

If you meet all of the requirements, you can be eligible for a one-year extension.

  • Currently a Hilton Diamond member with status that will expire on March 31, 2023.
  • Held Diamond status for at least three years (years do not have to be consecutive, but years in which you used a status match to achieve Diamond Status don't count).
  • Stayed at least 250 nights with Hilton (paid and reward nights are both eligible) or earned at least 500,000 base points since joining Hilton Honors (points earned via bonuses, promotions and cobranded credit cards don't count).

Only a Diamond Status Extension can be used. If you have used this benefit before, you will not be eligible. You won't be able to use it again if you decide to use the Diamond Status Extension in early23.

You can find more information on the landing page. You can opt in for a reminder email that will let you know if you are eligible for a Diamond Status Extension.

Other ways to earn Hilton Diamond status

You need to accumulate 42 nights, 21 stays and 84,000 base points to become a Diamond elite. Bonus points and double elite night credit are offered by the hotel.

Earlier this month, we learned that the elite requirements for members will be raised back to pre-pandemic levels. You will need at least 60 nights, 30 stays or 120,000 base points to be eligible for the Diamond status.

There are a few ways to get Diamond status. The easiest way to get complimentary Diamond status as a cardmember perk is to have theHiltonHonors American ExpressAspire Card.

The information for the card has been collected by a third party. The card issuer did not review or provide the card details on this page.

If the $450 annual fee is too much for you, you could get a card from the American Express company. The card offers complimentary Gold status as a perk and the ability to spend as much as you want.

If you put at least $40,000 on your card during a year, you will get an upgrade to Diamond status. If you spend at least $40,000 on your card over the course of a year, you'll keep your Diamond status.

The best credit card for you.

Bottom line

Travelers can put their elite status on hold at some airlines. Health issues, family problems or job loss are some of the reasons travelers might want to put their status on hold. The re-introduction of the Diamond Status Extension for top-tier elites is a good thing.

I don't think most U.S. based Diamond elite members should use their Diamond Status Extension. Saving the extension for the future is what I would recommend if I were you. It's possible that you won't be able to earn Diamond status via a credit card forever.
