Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in Red Bull cars
Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the drivers' championship in 2021 but Mercedes took the constructors' crown

Red Bull have been hit with a $7m fine and 10% reduction in allowed aerodynamic research for breaking the Formula 1 budget cap.

The governing body of the sport said that Red Bull spent more money than it took in.

The budget cap is not going to be reduced next year.

They can use their wind tunnel or computational fluid dynamics to design their car if they cut the 10% cut.

Red Bull acknowledged they were at fault and entered into an agreement with the FIA.

When Max Verstappen won his first title, Red Bull had committed a "minor" violation, which is up to 5% of the cap, but no further details were given.

The Red Bull team had overstated their costs by over $5 million in 2021, according to the statement.

The team's overspending was more than two million dollars.

The accounts are almost 5% and the overspend is 1.6%.

A total of 13 points of non-compliance included an understatement related to their new power-unit business and fixed costs.

The fine needs to be paid by the end of the month.

Will the penalty have an effect?

Red Bull had the lowest allowed aerodynamic research time for the first half of the year because they won the title.

In an attempt to close up the field, F1 introduced a sliding scale of aerodynamic restrictions last year.

Rival teams will have questions as to whether the punishment is appropriate, particularly over whether the fine will have any effect on a vastly wealthy global corporation, and also as to why the amounts published are different from those that were doing the rounds of the F1.

They will point out that overspending in areas like engineering and car design is irrelevant because they could have spent more in those areas.
