I agree with the saying that you should never skimp on anything that distinguishes you from the ground, but I think it needs to be updated. It is sensible to spend as much as you can afford on quality boots, beds, and office chairs, but do we give enough thought to the screen we stare at for eight hours or more daily? I dropped $1,300 on a gorgeous gaming monitor.
The Alienware AW3423DW caused quite a stir because it uses a QD-OLED panel. This display technology is poised to disrupt computer monitors, and the smartphone and TV markets were shaken up when it was introduced. It boasts vivid colors, lightning-fast response times, and inky blacks that are perfect for PC gaming.
You can lift off.
A well-balanced product in any category is rare. It is possible to pair the Alienware screen with a gaming PC that doesn't have a 4K resolution because it has a 3,440 x 1,450-pixel resolution. The choice of a QD-OLED panel by Dell makes it possible for higher peak brightness and greater color volume.
The screen can match the frames of the games you play with the 175-hertz refresh rate. The display has a gentle 1800-R curve that helps make content look immersive, and the 0.1-millisecond response time makes it feel quick. The depth and accuracy of colors is a step up. The AW3423DW covers 98.3% of the color space.
I have no regrets after looking at the AW3423DW for a few months. When the sun goes down, I start playing a game that I have been working on for many hours. This monitor has blown me away many times, from the armor and flaming swords of Total War: Warhammer III to the gore and viscera ofDoom Eternal.
The immediacy of thought into action is what makes it so luscious. There was no ghosting or any delay between my key presses or mouse clicks. The curve adds to the experience. It works fine with freesync graphics cards when connected via DisplayPort
I like to watch movies on the largest screen in my house, but there are times when my kids will claim the big screen in my living room. On this monitor, favorites like Blade Runner 2049 look gorgeous.
There are two ways to play the game. A torch in a dark scene will make you squint if you switch on the high definition peak 1000 mode. Only movies and games are allowed in this mode. If there is too much white on the screen, it can't cope, colors look off, and the brightness falls. Most of the time, theHDR 400 True Black mode looks better to me.
The build quality is excellent, and if you are not into the sci-fi feel of the molded white plastic and blue light on the back, you can turn them off in the monitor menu.
The Alienware AW3423DW is not meant for consoles, and you should avoid using either of the HDMI 2.0 ports to hook up your PC because they limit the refresh rate to 100 Hz. There are two out and one in but nousb-c.
The stand is sturdy, but it took up a lot of space on my desk. Thankfully, there is VESA support and I was able to get an Ergotron LX in white that held the screen up with no issues. Attaching a heavy monitor to a mount requires some help.
It's back to earth.
As pleasing as the Alienware AW3423DW is for gaming and movies, there is a good chance that you will have to use it for work as well. It isn't ideal as a work monitor, but some issues can be fixed with a little tweaking.
