Musk posted a message to advertisers explaining why he wanted to buy the company after showing up at the headquarters carrying a sink.
He said it was important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner. There is a danger that social media will splinter into far right and far left-wing echo chambers that will cause more hate and divide our society.
In the relentless pursuit of clicks, a lot of traditional media has fueled and catered to those extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost.
He said that's why he bought the social networking site. I didn't do it because it wouldn't be hard. I did it because I wanted to. I did it to help others. Failure to pursue this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility.
There was a six-month dispute between Musk and the company.
In April, Musk made an offer to acquire the company, but less than a month later, he decided to walk away from the deal.
Musk tried to pull out of the deal in order to get legal action taken against him.
Staff at the company will be waiting to find out if there are any job losses. According to recent reports, Musk intended to lay off 75% of its employees, but the new owner said that wasn't part of his plan.
Staff are interested in the changes. The community of more than 236 million daily active users will be interested in how the platform is changed. Musk has said that he may reduce content moderation, which many fear will allow more extreme and troublesome content onto the platform.
He acknowledged in his message to advertisers on Thursday that moderation may not be loosened after all.
