If the third baseman does not sign a new contract with the team by the end of the 2023 season, he will be free to join another team.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the gap is said to remain large. Boston offered $200 million-plus, but Devers wants at least 10 years and $300 million-plus.

Boston traded Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2020 season, which raises the need for the team to keep their own players.

The original offer was for about $168 million and eight years. Some media members who cover the team wondered if the offer of $20 million and one year more was actually an offer, since it seemed to insult him.

There is a player option on his current contract.

Boston is looking to bounce back from its last place finish in the American League East. He has a resume that includes two All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger.

Due to the presence of the New York Yankees, Toronto BlueJays, and even the Baltimore Orioles, it would make sense for Boston to look to keep its young players such as Devers.

It will take more money than it has offered to make that a reality, but fans can at least take solace in the fact that the discussions are still going on.
