According to a statement released by Slotkin's campaign, Cheney acknowledged their policy differences and urged Republicans to vote for her.

The endorsement is Cheney's first as a Democrat and follows her high profile role as one of two Republicans on the January 6 committee, in which she leveled strong criticism against Trump.

Slotkin, in a toss-up race for re-election against Barrett, has publicly disputed Republicans' claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election and spoken out against Trump.

Both Cheney and Slotkin criticized Republicans who denied the outcome of the 2020 presidential election when they served on the House armed services committee.

On January 5, 2021, 11 members of the Michigan state Senate wrote a letter to Congress asking for an investigation into the 2020 presidential election.

Cheney lost her seat in Congress when the former president endorsed Hageman, but she has expressed no regrets. She said after her primary loss that she could run for president in four years.
