42% of Americans would vote for a candidate from a new political party that is in the middle between Democrats and Republicans, according to a PRRI survey.

Only 33% would not vote for a candidate from any new political party, while 11% would vote for someone who is more liberal than the other party.

Democrats were more likely than Republicans to cast a ballot for a centrist option, with 40% of Democrats saying they would vote for a moderate candidate.

25% of Republicans said they would vote for someone more conservative than the GOP, and 20% of Democrats said they would vote for someone more liberal than the GOP.

When it comes to their age, gender, region, race and ethnic background, those who are open to a more centrist candidate are more educated than the general US population.

A majority of the time. According to PRRI respondents, the U.S. is in the wrong direction. 42% of respondents said society has become too soft and feminine, while 53% said it has. A majority of Americans think the U.S. has gotten worse since the 1950s, but that is down from last year, when a majority thought things were worse.

What We Don’t Know

Given the nature of the U.S.'s two-party system, a centrist third party may have a chance. A group of officials from both sides of the aisle announced a new party in July. Marjorie Hershey, a political science professor at Indiana University, told the Guardian that the likelihood of a forward party candidate being elected to congress is slim to none. Hershey said with an emphasis on no. Many of the candidates the Forward Party has endorsed so far still belong to a major political party, which has been criticized within the U.S.'s two-party system for peeling away votes from a Democratic or Republican candidate.

Key Background

According to the PRRI poll, Americans are open to the formation of new political parties. A survey done in August found 70% of people agree with the statement that they "often wish there were more political parties to choose from in this country." A USA Today/Suffolk University survey done in July found 26% believe a third party option is necessary. 39% of people think a third party is necessary, higher than the 30% who think Republicans and Democrats are enough. A majority of Americans want a third-party option because they don't like the current political parties and they don't like the way things are divided. According to a CBS News poll, 80% of people think the U.S. is more divided today than it was in their parents' generation. According to a majority of people, Americans with different political beliefs can still work out their differences.

Contra

The share of Americans who support a third-party option is decreasing. A majority of people think that Republicans and Democrats do a poor job, which is down from a record high of 62% who thought the same in early 2021.

There are challenges in moving toward a more inclusive democracy.

It's time to move forward! America has a new third party marching to power. There is a newspaper called The Guardian.

A majority of Americans think the US will have more political violence and less democracy.
