The city of Uvalde will benefit from the sale of tickets to the preseason women's basketball game between Texas and DePaul on Sunday.
The NCAA allows schools to schedule public exhibition games if they are used to support a charity event for social justice issues or to help recover from a catastrophic event.
The Texas coach said that sometimes he felt powerless to help someone. I thought this might be an opportunity for us as a university, as an athletic department and my program to really reach out.
He wants at least 10,000 tickets sold so that he can give $1,000 for every 1,000 fans who attend. A portion of the money raised will go to the Uvalde CISD moving forward foundation.
"I'm begging and pleading for our community to come out, to do as much as we can to help them rebuild and heal," said Schaefer, who noted that as of Wednesday there were 3000 tickets sold.


The game will be shown on television.
"Especially with the tragic event that happened, it's special to be able to help out like this," said Texas guard Sonya Morris. We want a lot of fans to come out and support us.
Robb Elementary is no longer open and will be torn down. Uvalde officials decided not to allow students and families to return to the site of the mass shooting.
While at a basketball event in Chicago this summer, he approached Doug Bruno about the idea of an exhibition. Bruno accepted immediately and said he was honored.
Bruno thought that the Uvalde tragedy could have happened anywhere. As citizens of the greatest country in the world, we have an obligation to end gun violence.
