According to a new paper, scientists may have found the reason why single life can be amazing.
Menelaos Apostolou, a professor at Cyprus' University of Nicosia and co-author of the study, told Psy Post that singlehood appears to be on the rise.
He asked the question "what people perceive as beneficial in being single?"
To get to the bottom of this age-old question, Apostolou and his co-author, Chistoforos Christoforou, broke their research down into two separate studies.
The Greeks were asked to write down their open-ended questions as to what they believed the advantages of singlehood to be. 84 different benefits were identified from those open-ended answers. The list of advantages was presented to a larger group of Greeks, who were asked to rank the benefits from most to least important.
The benefits were broken down into categories. The scientists were able to figure out which reason for choosing singlehood rose the most, and it was simply "more time for myself."
Most people like to be single because they prefer to be alone. Who would have believed that?
The second and third places were taken by "focus on my goals" and "no one dictates my actions". All go together.
The study found that men were more likely to rank one of the top ten categories, "freedom to flirt around," higher than women did.
Older people were more likely to rank "more time for myself" and "not do things I dislike" higher than younger people. It makes sense.
Everyone has a different reason for wanting to be single or in a relationship. This research seems to show that we all need some alone time at the end of the day. It's nice to not have someone in your home.
The top benefit of being single is having more time to yourself.
Scientists have a way of increasing sex in long-term relationships.
