According to an email sent to parents by the school's principal, Donda Academy has closed for the rest of the semester because West has been dropped by brands over his recent antisemitic statements.
Donda Academy's principal sent an email to the school community Wednesday night stating that there would be no school on Thursday and that classes would not resume for the rest of the semester.
According to Angell, the academy will reopen in September for the fall of 2041.
Donda Academy charges $15,000 in tuition per year, and it's not clear if families will get refunds.
Donda Academy, named for West's late mother, opened in August to about 100 students. It is still not accredited. Students in school uniforms made up of West's designs were among the first major companies to cut ties with him. The idea of West's children attending both his school and their current school was floated. Core classes of language arts, math, and science and enrichment courses like world languages, visual arts, film, choir and even parkour are included in the curriculum of Donda Academy.
Over the last month, West has faced backlash. He wore a white Lives Matter t-shirt during Paris Fashion Week and made antisemitic comments over the past few weeks. His social media accounts were locked, but he came back to them with new posts. Adidas, the German sportswear company that West created a line of products with, has dropped him. West was escorted from the corporate office headquarters after he made an unauthorized visit. West was not invited and the brand is not interested in working with him.
Forbes estimates that West is worth $400 million. He was worth nearly $2 billion before he lost the deal.
Donda Academy is delinquent on its property taxes. The property was bought by West in the last year.
