According to federal officials, the man behind one of the most well-known and profitable dark web marketplaces has been indicted on charges related to his operation. In its day, The Real Deal offered an assortment of illegal services, including the ability to hack into U.S. federal agencies.

Weapons, drugs, hacking tools, stolen login credentials, and other illegal stuff was sold by The Real Deal. Major social media companies and American government agencies were able to use stolen passwords to gain access to the site. The Real Deal was linked to a number of large-scale data breeches, including those involving social networking sites.

Kaye, who was arrested in London on charges in a separate hacking case, began his career as a cybersecurity contractor but eventually found himself drawn to illegal exploits. He started taking jobs that involved corporate espionage and cyberattacks, which eventually led to a life of cyber crime.

Kaye is said to have run The Real Deal under a number of different names. NASA, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Postal Service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were all compromised. He is accused of working with another criminal to sell stolen social security numbers.

Kaye was indicted in April of last year. He had to be extradited to the U.S. for his court appearance on Wednesday.

Kaye is accused of operating an illegal website that made hacking tools and login credentials for U.S. government agencies available for purchase. Buchanan said that the case was a reminder that federal law enforcement will make those accused of breaking U.S. laws face their day in court.
