Dennis Allen, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, said Wednesday that the team will start Andy Dalton at quarterback in the future.
Despite the fact that Jameis Winston practiced fully for the first time since Week 1, the Saints decided to stick with their backup quarterback.
"Andy's going to get the start again this week," Allen said. He's played well. I think we're in a good rhythm. We have scored points and moved the ball well. We're going to keep going with Andy as the quarterback.
The quarterback has completed 64.3% of his passes for 946 yards and 7 touchdown. Four times this season he has been fired. In New Orleans' loss to Arizona last week, the quarterback threw for 361 yards and 4 touchdown, but also had 3 turnovers, two of which were returned for scores.
Allen said it was an offensive decision if the decision was based on performance.
We're one of the top offenses in terms of moving the ball and we're also one of the top offenses in terms of scoring points. That's what the game is called. We are going to keep doing what we have been doing. The football needs to be protected better. I think we can be effective on the offensive side.
The running back said that the quarterback has done a good job of reading his reads.
He doesn't panic when he goes through his reads. He seems to get to the right spot at the right time. Some of the things we were doing were self-destructive. It's going to be good. I'm pretty sure he's the hardest person on himself about those two picks. He's fighting very hard to get that fixed. He competes. I talked about it with Jameis. The two of them compete.
As long as the offense continues to perform, the starter will be Andy.
Jameis is back to normal now. As we sit here, we're going with Andy. Allen said that Andy would stay in there if we continued to play well.
There are a lot of things that we are doing well. There was no need to upset the cart. We will continue to go how we are. We will stay the course if we keep doing that.
After the Saints tried and failed to acquire DeshaunWatson, the starter was declared early in the summer. He was signed as a backup.
He injured his back in New Orleans' win over Atlanta in the season opener. After playing through the injury for two games, the Saints sat him. Last week, he said that he didn't think it would take as long to get healthy.
Andy has been on a roll. It's sad that Jameis has been injured and is trying to get back. I don't get paid to make those decisions, but I feel like Andy has been playing well, giving us a little bit of stability. They thought Andy would be the best choice for now. I know that Jameis is going to get better. He's going to prepare like he's the starter even though he's not starting. He's going to be able to execute when his number's called again.
