There was an earthquake that rattled parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The epicenter of the earthquake was southeast of San Jose. Across the Bay Area, it was felt. People as far away as San Diego felt the shake.

There is an earthquake in Northern California on Tuesday.

The seismologist at San Jose State University was interviewed by FOX Weather after the temblor.

There is a 70% chance of a bigger mainshock within the next week. We might have felt a foreshock to a bigger earthquake.

She said there was a 2% chance as we got to magnitude 5.

The forecast for a magnitude 3 or greater earthquake was at 45% within a week and 21% within a day. There was a small chance of an earthquake larger than a magnitude 5.

There have been at least three other tremors in the area where Tuesday's shaking occurred.

According to Blisniuk, Tuesday's earthquake happened along the Hayward-Calaveras fault, one of the larger fault systems.

The fault lines accommodate motion between two big plates. The Pacific and North American Plates are used.

The last significant earthquake on the Calaveras fault was in 2007. There was a 5.4-magnitude earthquake.
