According to The Times of Israel, the substance grown by BioHarvest is 12 times more potent than nature's best.
The invention could make medical cannabis cheaper and more eco-friendly since it doesn't need as much water orfertilizer.
Ilan Sobel, CEO of BioHarvest, told The Times of Israel that they don't grow the plant at all.
The process is very fast.
He said that they grow them in bioreactors in just three weeks. The levels of active ingredients can be increased as a percent of the weight by our tech.
The resulting substance can be very potent but it doesn't have to be.
"We can dial up and down the various cannabinoids by adjusting specific conditions to which the cells are exposed," Sobel said.
He said that the substance doesn't require any genetic modification and replicates all the cannabinoids found in weed.
It would take 54 gallons of water and 90 percent less space to grow the same amount of material in plant form.
What is the disadvantage? The company has applied for licenses to sell its product in the US and Israel, but it will take a long time.
There is a question as to whether people will be willing to try it. The substance can be smoked, taken in pill or drop form, or chewed on, but that's not a guarantee that consumers will embrace the new option.
It's a great look at the industry. After partnering with Chris Hadfield, BioHarvest is going to test its products out in space.
One day, space travelers will be able to enjoy some marijuana without having to maintain an entire greenhouse.
