More people don't own electric cars because they can't charge them. They're worried about running out of juice and not having charging locations in the US as compared to gas stations.
A YouTuber came up with an alternative to range anxiety that was powered by a gasoline generator. He wanted to take a road trip around the Midwest.
I like my car, but I don't like stopping to charge on road trips. Matt Mikka said in a video published earlier in October that he doesn't like stopping to fill up his car because it's way faster than charging.
The Model S is one of the longest-range electric cars that you can buy. Mikka needs more.
He told Insider that he spent over a year and a half designing the system for the video. He said in the video that the car is charged when it's parked and moving.
It's called the "CordlessTesla."
The company has an extensive network of fast-charging stations that are exclusive to its owners. Thanks to a recent boost from the Biden administration, the availability of other charging stations is getting better.
Mikka said he was able to finish the journey without using a charging station. The man had to stop for gas.
The journey was not easy.
Since the car consumed more energy than the generator could produce, Mikka had to stop for hours at a time. He left the generator running in the hotel parking lot so he could have a full battery by the morning. He was pulled over for driving too slowly while trying to keep his energy use down.
Modifications eliminated the environmental and cost-saving benefits of owning an electric car. The fuel economy ranged from 14 to 24 miles per gallon.
This was a cool build, but I don't like it very much. Mikka said in the video that it didn't have enough power. I want to drive as long as I can until I get tired, not until the car needs to be charged.
He told Insider that he is working on a generator-powered version of the car.
He believes that version 2 will be the perfect car for road trips.
