The Ritz-Carlton was going to open in Portland in the middle of 2019. The property could be opening in the next six months or so, so I wanted to check out the new plans.
The Ritz-Carlton Portland is expected to open in April of next year. This will be the brand's first property in the Pacific Northwest and is expected to feature 35 floors and 251 hotel rooms. There will be a swimming pool on the 19th floor. On the 20th floor there will be an indoor/ outdoor restaurant and bar.
A ground-level food hall is one of the things that will be included in the $600 million development. The property is close to the courthouse square.
Marriotts Chief Development Officer for North America Full Service Hotels had the following to say.
“This landmark project is a game changer for The Ritz-Carlton brand and the City of Portland. The Ritz-Carlton, Portland will set a new standard for luxury hospitality in Portland, expand this iconic brand to the Pacific Northwest and introduce locals to the refined elegance and amenities associated with the Ritz-Carlton Residence lifestyle.”
The property is shown in the images below.
The Ritz-Carlton is going to be Portland's first five star hotel. Portland is a quirky place and is loyal to local businesses. As a general rule of thumb, I don't think many locals are a fan of this development. The hotel is opening in the same location as the food cart Pod.
Ritz-Carlton probably doesn't care what locals think since it's not their target demographic.
A reader commented on a Marriott executive's statement, and I think they summed up a common view point.
“The Ritz-Carlton…will…introduce locals to the refined elegance and amenities associated with the Ritz-Carlton Residence lifestyle.” Word to Ritz Carlton’s marketing team: locals do not need to be “introduced” to “refined elegance.” We know it–we just reject it. Just because we live a more casual lifestyle doesn’t mean we’re country bumpkins. Our many amazing restauranteurs understand the local scene. Chefs like Gabriel Rucker and Vitaly Paley create world-class food served with zero pretense. “Refined elegance” in the form of a white tablecloth/dress code/stuffy maitre’d is NOT what folks are looking for here.
I think this hotel will be used for leisure traffic and conferences. When it comes to tourism, the Pacific Northwest is a highly seasonal place. It is not uncommon for rates to be as high in the summer as they are in the winter.
The Ritz-Carlton Portland is going to be the most luxurious hotel in Portland. I want to know what pricing is like here and what the finished product looks like.
What do you think of this hotel?
