George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire and House of the Dragon, sat down with Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, to discuss his thoughts on the current state of affairs.
He gave an update on his work on The Winds of Winter, the sixth novel in his high fantasy series.
Martin, who is probably very tired of being asked for updates yet still manages to handle it with good humor and grace, said that he is making progress with The Winds of Winter.
It's going to be a very large book. Storm of Swords was the third volume and Dance with Dragons was the fifth volume. About 1,500 pages was the number of those. I think I'm about three quarters of the way done since this one is going to be bigger. Some of the characters are over for me. I've finished with a few of the characters, but not others, because the characters all overlap. I have to complete that weaving. It will take me a while.
I know that we're going to deliver it, and it's going to be published, and the next day I'll get a message on my phone saying "Where's a Dream of Spring?"
The fictional in-game history for Elden Ring was written by Martin. He has not had the chance to play it himself.
"I don't play it because people seem to want it," said Martin, who has an "addictive personality."
I used to play video games. I loved playing games like Railroad Tycoon and Homeworld. I would sit in my red flannel bathrobe and play one more game. I need to go cold turkey on this.
