As part of its earnings call, Microsoft announced a number of new data points for its acquisition of the popular code repository service. At the time of the acquisition, Microsoft said that GitHub had a recurring revenue of $200 to $300 million.

When the acquisition closed and Thomas Dohmke became the service's CEO, there were 28 million active users on the platform.

This is the first time that Microsoft has given any financial data about the acquisition.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in today's earnings call that GitHub's developer-first ethos has never been stronger since the company acquired it. More than 90 million people now use the service to build software for any cloud, on any platform.

Since the acquisition closed, Microsoft allowed GitHub to be a separate entity. A lot of developers were worried that Microsoft would change the way it operated and reduce its free offerings in order to squeeze more money out of it. Instead, the company expanded its free service and embraced open source and open source developers. It wouldn't have been possible without Microsoft. The new users numbers speak for themselves, even though some users defected to GitLab.
