Bamboo Airways is a fast-growing airline in Vietnam. Which alliance would be better?

Bamboo Airways hopes to join alliance

There is a new airline in Vietnam that was founded in the last year. The airline has 30 planes, including brand new Boeing 787-9s, which feature solid onboard products.

Bamboo Airways is hoping to expand in long haul markets despite the Pandemic.

I have to say that the carrier's growth has been erratic and at times strange. The airline was going to lease the A380s to begin service in the US.

The airline is planning to launch flights to the United States with Boeing planes. If the airline wants to expand much further, it will need to increase its wide body aircraft order.

While signing a new agreement to use Amadeus for its reservations system, the CEO of Bamboo Airways mentioned that the airline would like to join a global alliance.

“Cooperating with a critical partner like Amadeus is the first step in digital transformation of Bamboo Airways to improve the technology systems and leverage customer experiences. Our adoption of the Altéa PSS and other digital solutions marks a crucial breakthrough in our business strategy, thus creating a launch pad to thrive in international markets, join the world’s major airline alliance down the line, and affirm our global status.”

This isn't the first time that Bamboo Airways management has mentioned the possibility of joining a global alliance.

Bamboo Airways is growing at a fast pace

Which alliance should Bamboo Airways join?

Oneworld, Skyteam, and Star Alliance are global airline alliances. Vietnam Airlines is a member of the alliance so that wouldn't be a good fit for the airline.

Vietnam Airlines belongs to the SkyTeam alliance

Oneworld or Star Alliance would be better for Bamboo Airways.

Oneworld seems to be the most aggressive alliance when it comes to growth. Oneworld is a good complement to Bamboo Airways as they are the closest member airlines. In Southeast Asia, there is a void in oneworld.

Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines are close competitors in the region. San Francisco and Vancovuer are two destinations that Star Alliance may consider flying to.

I think oneworld would be a better fit for this situation. Some airlines in alliances have veto rights, so it's understandable that they exercise those to be conservative. They don't want a direct competitor in their alliance

Could Bamboo Airways join the oneworld alliance?

Bottom line

Bamboo Airways would like to join a global alliance. I think the airline will join either oneworld or Star Alliance since it already belongs to SkyTeam.

It would be great to see Bamboo Airways join an alliance since it has grown so fast. If the airline wants to grow in long haul markets it needs to develop partnerships.
