Schumaker has been named the new manager of the Miami Marlins.

The first eight seasons of Schumaker's career in the majors were with the St. Louis Cards. He was a member of two World Series winning teams.

"As we continue to grow as an organization, we felt it was important to find an individual who had been a part of a winning culture," Kim said. Skip has been a member of two championship teams and will be a great example to our players. He was the clear choice as the club's new manager due to his leadership style, teaching skills and attention to detail.

Schumaker was an assistant with the San Diego Padres for four years.

Schumaker said in a statement that he was excited and grateful that the owner and the organization gave him the opportunity to manage a very talented team. "Delivering a winning, sustainable culture with the exception of getting into the playoffs is the next step for this organization and South Florida - and I can't wait to start."

Don Mattingly's contract was not renewed at the end of the year. After seven seasons as Miami's manager, Mattingly left as the franchise's all- time leader in wins.
