The Lego project is a replica of the Polaroid OneStep SX 70 instant camera. There aren't details about what the kit will look like, how much it'll cost, or when it'll become available, but it's another example of a fan-made design officially going into production thanks to Lego's ideas platform
The mock-up was created by Minibrick productions and features a ton of fun, nerdy touches: it has a working viewfinder, a gear that shoots out a picture from the film tray, and is nearly to-scale. A replica box of film and a rainbow are included.
Not all of these features will make it into the official Lego kit, and the version you can actually buy may look a bit different. The pictures in this story are from Minibrick's submission to the ideas program, which allows people to come up with designs for Lego kits that users can vote on in hopes that they'll become actual products.
It is not a sure thing that Lego will make an idea after 10,000 votes. Lego rejected a set based on Metroid that got enough votes but was rejected because it was too similar to Lego's other sets.
Mass-produced things come with a different set of considerations, so sets may be trimmed down a bit from the original idea. It will be fun to see a Polaroid camera get the Lego treatment, and I might pick up the kit so I can compare it to the real thing. I would like this Lego set to function, as in, an actual camera that takes pictures. The photo and build quality would be similar to the real thing.
If you can still buy real working Polaroids, it might be better to just keep it as a model. The Lego mechanism that spits out a picture-shaped brick is cute.
There are some bugs, an incredibly detailed replica of an Orient Express train, and Lego posters that are related to space exploration.
