Eastern Australia is experiencing major flooding for the fifth time in 19 months due to record-breaking wet weather.

Four people have died, thousands of people have been evacuated, homes and shops have been flooded, and roads have been cut off due to the heavy rains.

In New South Wales, the worst- affected state, 43 local government areas have now flooded, mostly in rural areas.

Over half a million bags have been sent to try to limit the damage. On 22 October, the emergency services minister for New South Wales said that they were "smilng the state" at the moment.

The state has been badly hit by the four other major floods that have affected eastern Australia. The floods were the most expensive in Australia's history.

New South Wales premier Dominic Perrottet said at a press conference on 24 October that the state would be affected by a natural disaster at some point in the future.

A record-breaking 2.4 metres of rain has fallen in the state's capital, meaning about 3 million Olympic-sized swimming pools have fallen on the city. Tom Saunders, a meteorologist at ABC, said that they broke the record and destroyed it.

In the last few weeks, several parts of Victoria and Tasmania have received record rainfall, causing flooding in 24 local government areas.

Two large-scale weather systems originate in the oceans on either side of Australia and have caused the 19 months of wet weather.

Today NSW SES crews alongside partner agencies provided medical resupply and assisted the inundated community of #Gunnedah NSW with flood evacuations.

Currently there are two Emergency Warnings out for parts of North Gunnedah.

La Nia brings rain to Australia's east coast. Since late 2020 there has been a rare grouping of three La Nia cycles.

The Indian Ocean Dipole is a weather system that brings rain to south-eastern Australia.

The extra 1C of warming in the atmosphere means it can hold an extra 7 percent of the rain that can fall.

It will take time to quantify how much climate change has influenced this particular event.

A high-pressure weather system off Australia's east coast has stopped rain clouds from moving offshore, which has caused the recent wet weather.

When La Nia ends, eastern Australia should start to see a bit of a dry spell. Even a small amount of rain could cause more flooding because the ground is so saturated that it can't absorb any more water. All the additional water will need some time to be released.

Multiple evacuation orders are in place across NSW, with a record-breaking flood warning being one of the gravest concerns for the Moree community.

Modelling published in 2008 predicted that climate change would cause longer dry spells in Australia.

Extreme weather events become more intense and frequent as a result of climate change.

Climate change is thought to be associated with the hot, dry conditions across the US, Europe and China in recent months.
