Callum Hudson-Odoi on life in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea

Hudson-Odoi likes to do something different.

When you hand in a transfer request at the age of 18 after being rejected by a club, it shows you are willing to try new things.

The 21-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at Bayer Leverkusen, where he is speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation.

He said that there were a lot of times when things were great. There were times when you wondered what had happened. I don't know what I'm doing not to be playing.

It was hard sometimes. You are sitting on the bench and wondering if you have done enough.

I give my all in every game, but then I don't get picked. If there are other players doing well in your position, they should be picked as well, but at the same time, you always want to fight for your position and have a chance.

Hudson-Odoi is yet to speak with Potter, who has had a great start to his tenure. The Leverkusen loan ends a year after the winger's contract ends.

He didn't know what the future would hold. We'll see what happens at the end of the season, but at the moment I'm going back to Chelsea. I have been there since I was a child.

I look at things as learning curves. It's always a learning experience when you do it again.

I'm here to help the team as much as I can. I don't think that's that far away.

Hudson-Odoi says he is learning from the 'hands-on' approach of new manager Xabi Alonso

In recent years, Hudson-Odoi's story is typical of others. He made his first team debut at the age of 17 and showed some of his talent when introduced from the bench.

It has been difficult to become a first-team regular due to the fact that there have been four managers in five years. Potter would have been a fifth, but Hudson-Odoi had already left.

Hudson-Odoi was part of the England team that won the Under 17 World Cup. He had yet to make a start in the premier league and his senior England debut came before that.

Hudson-Odoi was rewarded with a five-year contract worth more than $140,000 a week, after being pleaded for patience by his former boss.

The ambition was clear. There has been no shortage of interest in the young player since he was not content to sit on the bench and suffered an injury in the middle of the season.

Even if there were more injuries last season, he appeared to be in favor. At the start of the season, it was obvious that a change was coming.

Hudson-Odoi said a move to Germany had always been at the back of his mind and he followed in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, who he spoke to before moving to Leverkusen.

Kai Havertz was consulted as well. He explained to me how the games and the league are located. Hudson-Odoi said that he was persuaded to come here.

Hudson-Odoi is getting what he wants after a summer in the gym. He has made at least one appearance in eight straight starts.

He says it would be a good place to try something new.

When you have to do things alone, it makes you mature quicker. I'm trying to cook a bit more and have been watching a lot of TV, so I'll call my mom and ask her if I'm doing it right.

It was game time that made me come. I wanted to be more responsible when it came to things.

You don't want to have that mentality if you come over here and think you've won a trophy. You want to help the team by winning more.

I felt like I was being a bit safe and not really wanting to drive past players but now I feel more confident.

World Cup hope?

He can't make decisions about his future at the moment. He has an interesting situation about his international career.

Hudson-Odoi's heritage makes it possible for them to talk about playing for the country of their birth. He travels to the country when he can, because his parents are from there.

Although he has played for England before, he can switch loyalties if he plays before the age of 21.

Hudson-Odoi smiled and said "nothing I would say at the moment on camera, I would love to tell you."

At the moment, I'm focused on the best I can do. You can't predict what will happen in the future.

I've been thinking about the Ghana- England situation for a while. I think right now it's more about getting myself back into shape, playing a lot of games, and just feeling like myself. My mind is not closed.

The only team that will benefit from that is Leverkusen.
