You can't scream in space. Since you aren't in space, you'll want to check out the scariest and best space horror games on the market. Our goal is to show our picks for the biggest and best space-set horror games in chronological order.

This Halloween season, we believe all of the video games mentioned here are worth checking out and covering a wide range of scary stories and unnerving atmospheres that are perfect for this time of year. One exception is that they must be set in space.

As scares come in many forms, great space horror games aren't obligated to play with monsters or supernatural phenomena. Outer space is scary, but not as tense or threatening as it could be.

If you are looking for calmer space video games that look to the stars, you might want to check out our list of the best space exploration games. We have prepared a list of upcoming space games that you should keep an eye on, including the Dead Space remake and the Callisto Protocol.

  • Release date: April 3, 2020
  • Platform: PC

The first title in our list is a free-to-play game. The game can be played in less than 50 minutes, and it will make you feel like you are in an Alien movie.

We have a soft spot for short stories about fear of the unknown, and We Went Back is a good example. It's good to look for a small team of developers. Maybe a bigger project based on this little treat will follow in the future as its Steam reviews are very positive.

9. Moons of Madness

  • Release date: October 22, 2019
  • Platform: PC, Xbox One, PS4

The game is called Moons of Madness. This one is larger than the last one. Rock Pocket Games, a Norwegian studio, started developing mobile games and then made the jump to full-blown horror for PCs and consoles.

This is a good one if you are a fan of the genre. Moons of Madness has a lot of sci-fi elements. The initial setbacks in your mission are not unusual. What is true and what isn't? Even though things are going to get dark soon, you can't wait to discover Mars' biggest secret.

8. SOMA

SOMA_Frictional Games

  • Release date: September 22, 2015
  • Platform: PC, Linux, MacOS, Xbox One, PS4

It is a bit of a wild card. It is not set in outer space but underwater on Earth. It's part of this list. It is influenced by space-set games and sci-fi films. It feels like a spiritual successor to the classics.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is one of the most influential horror games of the past 20 years. The Frictional people went all in on the story. The stealth sections were not flawless, but the rest of the game is top tier.

7. Hellpoint

Hellpoint_Cradle Games

  • Release date: July 30, 2020
  • Platform: PC, Linux, MacOS, Xbox One and Series X/S, PS4/5, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia

There's a game in space. There is a pitch that will make a lot of people click a button. The dark heart of Hellpoint is in the right place, even though it lacks the polish of bigger games. There is a space colony. Check to see if it's true. Is it possible that we shouldn't have messed with this cataclysm? Check to see if it's true. Is there anything not to like?

The player controls a humanoid that is stuck on the space station. There is a huge mystery that needs to be solved. This is not a game for everyone. You've been told.

6. Observation

  • Release date: May 21, 2019
  • Platform: PC, Xbox One, PS4

It is a completely different approach to telling a spooky tale set in outer space. The truth about a mission gone awry must be uncovered through the lens of the station's computer, whose point-of-view is limited and changes as the game progresses.

Observation has earned its spot on this list of the best space horror games, even though it isn't stress free.

5. DOOM 3: BFG Edition

  • Release date: October 16, 2012
  • Platform: PC, Android, Xbox 360/One, PS3/4, Nintendo Switch

Even though it's a great first-person shooter and horror game, it's not as good as the other ones. The latest iteration of the franchise amplified its power fantasy philosophy up to eleven, but the classic installments still had that kind of energy. The tech jump by id Software in the early 2000s gave the game a new look.

It is difficult to argue against the bland representation of the rest of the franchise in DOOM 3. The shooting holds up, the atmosphere is suffocatingly dark, and the experience makes for an interesting detour from punching demons in the face. The "BFG Edition" will give you all the latest bells and whistles.

4. Prey

Prey_Arkane Studios

  • Release date: May 5, 2017
  • Platform: PC, Xbox One, PS4

An ambitious sequel that promised bounty-hunting in a Star Wars-like setting was canned by Bethesda due to ongoing development issues. Prey, an Arkane Studios-developed first-person shooter and immersive sim, took a lot of inspiration from BioShock and other classics.

Prey is an amazing game that is under appreciated. It shares many of the same strengths as the studio's Dishonored games. The story takes place in a different time period in which humankind took to the stars far earlier and encountered a hostile alien race with strange physical and psychic powers

Have you ever been hit by a cup? Is that not true? You must play Prey.

3. System Shock 2

System Shock 2_Nightdive Studios

  • Release date: August 11, 1999
  • Platform: PC, Linux, MacOS

If it weren't for System Shock 1 and 2, many of the best space horror games wouldn't exist. The second game gained a larger following due to its refined mechanics and systems.

The original plan was for System Shock 2 to be a stand alone game, but it was changed after Electronic Arts became the game's publisher. In 2114, the Von Braun starship is under attack from a genetic infection. There is a lot of action and thrills in this one, but it is the plot and one of the best video game villains that make it click together. It gets really crazy.

This is a saga that will be reactivated in the mainstream soon because of the development on System Shock 3.

2. Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation_Creative Assembly

  • Release date: October 6, 2014
  • Platform: PC, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS, Xbox 360/One, PS3/4, Nintendo Switch

Alien: Isolation was the first novel by Creative Assembly. There have been a lot of Alien games that recreated the second film's thrills and action, but this one took a page out of Amnesia's book and focused on delivering the perfect sequel to the original 1979 horror classic.

15 years after the events that ended with the destruction of the ship Nostromo, Ellen Ripley's daughter is still alive. It's flight recorder is recovered and she joins a mission to find it. She was fated to face her mother's horror. It is a must-play for anyone into the sci-fi franchise.

1. Dead Space

Dead Space_EA

  • Release date: October 14, 2008
  • Platform: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Dead Space was a hit when it was released in 2008. It's set in an abandoned ship that discovered something no one should have touched, but its deep worldbuilding and exquisite enemy and level design made it one of the best ever.

The original Dead Space game is still worth playing even though a full-blown Dead Space remake is coming on January 27,23. Dead Space 2 is an excellent follow-up to the first game. Dead Space 3 was a horror-themed third-person shooter, but some fans think it was too far away from the original story.
