Employees at the social media company have described the billionaire's reported plan to cut the workforce as "reckless."
There are a lot of concerns in the draft of an open letter. It is not known how many of the company's employees have signed the letter. Unless we have critical mass, signatures won't be made public.
The layoffs will hurt the ability of the company to serve the public conversation. A threat of this magnitude undermines our users' and customers' trust in our platform and is a transparent act of worker intimidation.
In order to make clear the magnitude of the issues facing the company if Musk takes control, the letter said that a threat to workers at Twitter is a threat to the company's future. There is no Twitter without our work. It called on Musk and the management of the company to stop the threats of layoffs.
A number of demands were made in the letter.
They insist that the current levels of staff are maintained, and that Musk commits to preserving the ability to work remotely. This could turn out to be a flashpoint as Musk is known to dislike remote work and at the height of the Pandemic, there was a suggestion that some employees could work from home forever.
The letter ended with a demand that workers be treated with dignity and not be treated as pawns in a game played by billionaires.
The story of Musk's expected takeover of the social media platform has some way to run, with more twists and turns likely over the coming weeks, but we don't know whether any of the demands will be heard or even acted upon.
