The penalty that Fernando Alonso received at the United States Grand Prix raises questions about the direction of the sport, according to the two-time world champion.

The protest by Alonso's team against the decision to demote him out of the points will be heard on Thursday.

It's an important day for the sport as this decision will determine if we're going in the right direction.

Alonso responded to messages of support with a post.

"It's one of those rare times in sport that I feel we are all on the same page and share the same opinion towards rules and regulations," he said.

Alonso said after the race that he considered his drive one of the best of his career, after he crashed at 180mph, his car did a wheelie, hit a wall, he pitted for a new front wing, resumed at the back and climbed to seventh.

The two-time champion has questioned the decision-making of officials on a number of occasions this year, and his frustration is shared by the majority of his fellow drivers.

At the Spanish Grand Prix, he accused the world governing body of incompetence and lack of knowledge.

The US Grand Prix was held after the governing body of F1 angered drivers by allowing a recovery vehicle on the track in bad weather.

Alpine's appeal will be heard in Mexico City on October 27th.

The team questioned the decision of the US GP stewards to allow a protest by the team even though the time limit had expired.

Alonso's car was in an unsafe condition because he drove it for some time with a damaged wing mirror, and then without one when it fell off, according to the stewards.

Three times this season, their cars have been given the black-and-orange warning flag, demanding a car is pitted for repairs, according to the team.

Alpine was not asked to pit the car or remove the mirror at no point during the race.

If a car is missing a rear-view mirror after an incident, it will be forced to retire.

There are questions about the consistency of decision making after stewards rejected a protest against Red Bull.

A damaged front wing fell off Perez's car as he ran.
