If you spend $15,000 on Delta Air Lines this year, you'll be able to keep your Diamond Diamond status. You can earn 15,000 MQDs if you maximize your earnings on Delta's partners.
SkyTeam members can earn MQDs with any SkyMiles member. Depending on how long the fight is, a $1,000 long-haul business class ticket booked directly with KLM could accumulate up to 2,000 MQDs.
If you earn MQDs on partner flights, you can earn Delta's elite status much less expensive.

Delta mostly gives elite status to members with high annual spending, at least when you earn status on Delta's own flights. If you are eligible for the MQD waiver through credit card spending, you will be able to get status on Delta-ticketed flights, but you will need Medallion Dollars to do so.

Some airlines will let you know about your class online. Next to your class of service, Virgin Atlantic will show your fare class.
On the checkout screen, you can see what class you are booking in. On the Korean Airlines business-class flight from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to Incheon International Airport (ICN), I was able to select "show details" on the website. If you're booking an itinerary with multiple airlines, you should still confirm the ticketing airline with the website.

You can sometimes earn north of 3.5 MQDs per dollar spent, so if you spend just over $4,000 you can earn 15,000 MQDs. You would need to spend $15,000 on Delta flights to get 15000 MQDs.
