As the once-overwhelming demand for COVID vaccinations continues to decline, this is a way for Pfizer to hold onto previous vaccine revenue and then some.
Good news for Pfizer. It's bad news for people who need to be vaccine free or who want others to be vaccine free. Experts expect other vaccine providers to follow suit.
DavidRisinger said in a research note that he expects Moderna to adapt. Pfizer/bioNTech, Moderna and Novavax will all be in the same price range for the foreseeable future, according to him.
Moderna declined Reuter's request for comment, but has previously suggested putting its commercial price somewhere between $65 and $100 per shot.
Pfizer's proposed vaccine prices are far from normal and compare to the average annual cost of flu shots. The US government will pay between $20 and $30 for a standard flu shot, and up to $70 for the highest-dose shot. It's hard to imagine where the billions of dollars that the government will likely soon be pocketing by Pfizer will go.
