Do you think the future will start now? The Line is a 105 mile city that people can live and work in without ever leaving.
It feels like we are inching ever closer to a bleak future from a sci-fi novel, the only thing we've really been missing is a futuristic megalpolis. The Line, a sleek and seemingly unnecessary approach to a city in Saudi Arabia, was the subject of a lot of attention this summer. New footage from Saudi Arabia shows that The Line is a work in progress.
The video was shot by Ot Sky in Saudi Arabia, but it was posted to YouTube. A soundtrack of shots of construction equipment and trucks scattered throughout the desert is what you get from the drone footage.
Neom, a company set up by the Saudi Arabian government to innovate the nation, is bringing the Line to us. Neom claims that the city will feature several neighborhoods in only five minutes, end to end travel in 20 minutes, and a consistent micro-climate. Oxagon and Trojena are two similar projects that Neom is working on together.
In a Neom press release, the Saudi Arabian crown prince mentioned a possible completion date of around 2030. The Line will continue to be a pipe dream until I see the mirrors in the desert.
The brutal monarchy that rules Saudi Arabia, including its contentious history marred by a bloody human rights record, doesn't go away with the building of a humongous city.
