"Middlesbrough was the first professional club I played for as a nine-year-old boy, so it's a very special feeling to be back here as a head coach," he said.

Growing up in the north-eastern part of the country, I know what football means to people. It's a real honor for me to be in this position and to know that you're passionate about the game and about the club.

He will be assisted by someone else. The former player was the manager at the time.

Percovich will become the club's head of player pathway and development.

Over the course of a 12-year career at United, which included stops at West Ham United and Spurs, Carrick won 17 trophies.

He was in the England squad for both the 2006 and 2010 World Cup.

After his retirement he became part of United's coaching staff, initially under Jose Mourinho for a short period until the Portuguese was sacked and then under Solskjaer for three years.

During Solskjaer's time at United, he led the team to two wins, a draw and a loss in the league, before stepping down.

'Michael is perfect fit'

The club has had six permanent managers since they were demoted from the premier league in 2017: Woodgate is one of them.

The owner of the club is excited at the prospect of working with the new chairman.

"We had identified a number of potentials for the vacancy who we spoke with, and were impressed by all, but Michael was the outstanding candidate," Gibson told the club's website.

Both Michael and the club share the same values and ambitions.

Michael is the perfect fit for us and he believes this is the right club at the right time.

Expectations were high for a promotion push this season after the club finished seventh under Wilder.

Three weeks ago, the ex-Sheffield United boss was fired after just two wins from their first 11 games.

The club sits at one point and one place above the bottom three despite Percovich's seven points.

The five games before the break for the World Cup, starting at Deepdale on Saturday, will be used by Carrick to try and get rid ofBoro from the bottom of the table.
