  • There was an attack on the bridge between Russia and the peninsula.

  • The bridge is still standing despite the damage.

  • The attack on the bridge came after other people in the area.

An explosion shook the bridge between mainland Russia and the peninsula that was annexed by Russia.

The blast caused the road bridge to collapse and damaged the rail bridge.

The bridge has been blamed on the Ukrainians but they haven't officially claimed it.

The road and rail movement on the bridge was limited after the blast, with heavier trucks crossing by boat rather than on the road.

The bridge is important to the Russians. The shortest land route from Russia to the peninsula was used by Russian forces before and after the attack.

Military infrastructure is located on the peninsula. It is home to many military airports and bases. Russia's southern front in Ukraine is in need of operational and logistical support, and that's why it's important that it's located in the peninsula of Crimean.

Logistical issues on Russia's southern front are likely to get worse as a result of the attack, according to the British Ministry of Defense.

To compensate for reduced bridge traffic, Russia now has to transport troops, equipment, and supplies by boat or by redirecting them through southern Ukraine, which can take much longer.

On the Russian side of the strait, there is a large queue of cargo trucks and Russian forces are likely increasing logistical supply flow through Mariupol.

The Institute for the Study of War said in an assessment after the attack that limited damage to the rail portion of the bridge means traffic will increase.

The bridge may be weaker due to structural damage and the weight of rail traffic may need to be reduced.

Russian officials have not commented on the impact of the blast, but a government decree signed this month orders repairs to be completed by July 1, 2023, which could be an indication of the extent of the damage.

Happy birthday, Mr. president

The only goal was not limited by the military impact.

Chris Miller said that the attack on the bridge was meant as a message.

Russian media hailed the bridge as a major achievement.

At a ceremony for the opening of the bridge's road section, Putin said it was a historic day. Putin said that Russian leaders had wanted to build such a bridge for a long time.

On Putin's birthday, the attack took place.

Miller said that an attack on the peninsula would be a blow to Putin's signature accomplishment.

Miller said that Russians are aware that their control over the occupied peninsula is threatened in a way it hasn't been in years.

There were reports of 38,000 cars leaving in one day after the attacks.

The stage for more measures to support the war effort is likely to be set this week by Putin's declaration of medium readiness. The Kremlin's handling of the war has eroded domestic support and the latest attack on the peninsula may further tarnish Putin's reputation.

The war has hurt Russians' trust in Putin.

Competence and stability was the way that Putin justified his repressive rule at home. He is in a state of war that is destabilizing Russia.
