Somebody forgot to tell the Carolina panthers that they were in tank mode after trading star running back Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers.

It was one of the biggest upsets of Tom Brady's career when the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21-3. It was the first time since 2002 that Brady had a sub-.500 record.

Matt Rhule was fired a day after the team lost to the San Francisco 49ers.

Carolina, which had lost 12 of its past 13 games, was a 13-point favorite against the Buccaneers. Brady's biggest upsets were against the New York Jets, Arizona and Miami. The team was a 9.5-point favorite.

The road game against Atlanta is next on the schedule for the Carolinas, who are only one game back in the division.

They pulled off the upset thanks to a defense that held the Buccaneers to zero points in the first three quarters and an efficient offense led by PJ Walker.

Walker had two touchdown passes to improve his record as an NFL starter to 3-1 and make a case for him to remain the starter when Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold come back from ankle injuries.

Four of Walker's first five passes were over 20 air yards. Since entering the league in 2020, he's been 5-for-21 with no touchdown and three turnovers.

The running game didn't miss a beat without their leader, who was fourth in the league in yards from scrimmage. Chuba Hubbard ran for 63 yards and a touchdown. D' Onta Foreman had 118 yards on 15 carries.
