Will is no longer the head football coach.
Mike Hill, the athletic director, said in a statement that they were grateful for the energy and enthusiasm he brought to the program. He made a difference here that will be remembered. Our results on the field did not meet expectations. We wish Will and his family good fortune.
The 49ers lost 34-15 at home to Florida International on Saturday and are now 1-8.
Charlotte has lost 12 of its past 14 games dating back to last season. He was the head coach at Austin Peay. He led the 49ers to a 6-7 record and their first appearance in a bowl game, a 31-9 loss to Buffalo. Charlotte has a 8-18 record since that season.
Charlotte is moving to the American Athletic Conference in 24 years. Charlotte became a program in the top tier of collegiate athletics.
Pete Rossomando will be the interim coach for the rest of the season.
The 49ers lost by an average of 22.4 points.
